Frequently Asked Questions

From 30-34 weeks or as soon as you have completed the Born Ready online modules.

Yes, we encourage your support person to attend. In fact, we’ll teach them how to be a good coach to ensure they are equipped to support you effectively during labour. In doing so, both you and your partner can feel more empowered and confident throughout the birthing process.

As soon as you can! We recommend an individual pelvic floor screening at around 22 weeks. Even this early, we can identify those who are likely to have a longer second stage labour. We can help you make your pelvic floor more flexible and your pushing technique more efficient. We provide 1:1 pre-natal physiotherapy consults to make sure you are on the right track.

Absolutely! Pelvic floor muscle strengthening is recommended in pregnancy to prevent and manage symptoms of incontinence and prolapse. Pregnant women who do regular PFMT have better vaginal birth outcomes. We recommend an assessment of flexibility, tone, completeness of relaxation, and co-ordination as well. This assessment is especially important if you have a history of painful sex, constipation, pelvic girdle pain or low back pain, or bladder urgency, or if this is your first baby and you are over 35yrs of age.

It’s good to start perineal massage at 34 weeks. We can do this for you or show you and/or show your partner how to do this effectively. The Epi-No birth trainer is recommended from 37 weeks. To learn more about preventing tearing during childbirth, read our blog article;  7 Tips from a Pelvic Floor Physio to Prevent Tearing During Childbirth.

This is a device that helps prepare the pelvic floor for the physical stretch of vaginal childbirth reducing tearing and complications. Learn more about the Epi-No here.

Perifit is a small device and app that is used for Kegel exercises through feedback and video games. It allows you to see your progress and you can even compete with other women through the app. This is recommended for postpartum pelvic floor muscle recovery. Our birth preparation clients are eligible for a discount- please ask for the coupon code during the workshop or consultation.
