Prostatecomy
Recovery Following Prostate Surgery
Prepare and recover from Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (whether done via Holmium Laser Enucleation or via a more traditional diathermy TURP), or Radical Prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
Urine leakage after prostatectomy is common. We can provide advice on correct pelvic floor exercises after prostate surgery (also known as urethral sphincter exercises). Hint: this is not something you do on a leg press machine! It very specific and can easily be done incorrectly!
We will advise you about pads and other containment methods, good bladder and bowel habits, fluid intake, and how to plan a safe return to full activity, including sex, if you have had a nerve sparing procedure.
Physiotherapy for Erectile Dysfunction
Some types of erectile dysfunction are caused when blood (that’s what keeps the penis rigid) leaks out of the penis through the veins due to weak pelvic floor muscles. There is evidence that pelvic floor muscle training helps this condition.
See your medical practitioner first to exclude treatable medical conditions, as erectile dysfunction can be the first warning sign of cardiovascular disease, which has potentially serious consequences.
Physiotherapy for Premature Ejaculation
Defined as ejaculating before penetration or within 1 minute of penetration, premature ejaculation can very quickly erode your self-confidence. Strengthening the superficial (penile) pelvic floor muscles can help.
Of course, your brain is a vital part of sexual performance, so concurrent psychosexual support can be useful.
Physiotherapy To Assist Men's Pelvic Pain
Do you experience pain in the testicles, penis, or anus? Or intrusive bladder sensations? Do you have pain that occurs during erection or ejaculation?
If no medical or urological cause is identified, or if you have been told you have ‘non-bacterial prostatitis’, or ‘pudendal neuralgia’, you may benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.
You may need to learn to release and lengthen your pelvic floor and hip or abdominal muscles, and mobilise restricted myofascial and nerve tissue so that your hypersensitive nervous system can at last wind down.
Physiotherapy For Bowel Problems
Do you always have to strain on the toilet or do you rely on laxatives to get yourself empty? You may have pelvic floor muscles that tighten instead of release.
Some men might feel like there is a golf ball in the rectum, but a tension or holding pattern in the pelvic floor muscles can become such a familiar habit that your brain often doesn’t register it as the cause. Our assessment can tell you if this is likely.
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for Low Back Pain, Hip or Groin Pain
If you have chronic low back pain, chronic hip or groin pain, have a suspected hernia, or have had abdominal surgery, such as a hernia repair or colon surgery, you may benefit from a pelvic floor and deep abdominal assessment with a view to core retraining.
Our musculoskeletal physiotherapy services can help with any muscle and joint aches, pains or niggles. In most cases we can offer same day appointments, so don’t let a little niggle become a major problem!
